no point me trying to summarise this guy when the website does it so well for me.....just another guy doing something better than the last guy. He seems to enjoy making faces out of other faces/body parts. You can tell a lot of his material is digital but still contains the SOUL and the feel of craftsmanship....which I like a lot.

definately definately the best advert I've seen in a long time, in my opinion obviously. I've never seen anything so flawless and perfected EXCEPT I hate it at the end when they spoil it all with the 'is that Linda'; 100% could have done without that, should have remained free of speech the entire way.

The contrast with the vintage ads shown below is just amazing, perfectly demonstrates the nature of the advertising game.

design for very old screens, a quality animation demonstrating the importance of preparation, amongst other things.

seeing as the guy who makes this is obviously a madman at computer arts and stuff. could do with a few more images. my guess is that they're all photoshop jobs. they are mad, and digitalised to the point where they're almost really horrible to look at. truly nasty. i hate them. but they are really impressive.



do you really need a computer to do this....



i rekon with a bit of patience this must be proper easy to make.

more design for screen, a nation of shopkeepers

was looking for something decent to do tonight so started trawling round a few websites....nation of shopkeepers is always pretty nice so i ended up on their website, ended up on their art page which I haven't looked at before. some pretty neat stuff....didn't end up going out in the end, sadly. saved the money and done some blogging instead.

adam hancher and jack hudson. a proper quirky animation, pretty haunting, even though the illustration style isn't really anything I haven't seen before. cute though....thought provoking and whatnot.



a nice bit of type by Come de Bouchony, a frenh graphic designer. I don't know what it means but the combination of a unique typeface with a subtle use of photography is really nice, a style that seem relatively unexplored in the field of typography.



Julien Vallee - Montreal. "Julien likes to use physical image making well endorsed by the various technological tools available in order to the bridge the gap between physical and virtual art." sweet. seems like everyone's ideal output, particularly among the artists and designers feature on nation of shopkeeper's showreel. once again it's nothing I haven't seen before but it is slightly more edgy than your average analogue x digital crossover design of this style. I honestly can't envision how it would be possible to make this sort of thing but I'm pretty set on learning how to at some point. 



all the art and design displayed on the website reflect's the bar's quirky and alternative nature. it makes me want to go there now and sit around and do some drawings and drink, so from a business angle it is obviously a success. I'm not the biggest fan of the actual artwork, I'm more fascinated at how well it reflects the venue's vibes of edgy creativity. I'd be well happy to see my work amongst all these though, as anyone would. It'd be nice to see more and different kinds of bars and venues place a greater emphasis on the artwork that it inspires, rather than your average printed canvases or standard back-lit walls of type or whatever.

I imagine matey does his own artwork for these ones.....decent records....which are actually really dark when studied closer...they match the music really well also. I properly like these repeating patterns  of the first and third ones, and actually they are really fresh because I can't honestly say I've seen much like it before. mad. The third one was released on the swamp81 label, all of its releases have fresh artwork and design.

God knows what they mean. Some matey created a layout engine and a really efficient graphics library in python. And then apparently lost almost all of the code. "Computers suck", he says. He's right.

medicine research - energy tablets etc

A few designs of energy bars and tablets. Stuff to keep you going all day. The style of design appears absolutely unique to this type of product, I can't think of many other things that share similarities with them. Italic letter also appears to be favoured here, quite obviously because of their forward-moving stance.

Medicine research - NHS promotional material

couple of functional but incredibly boring pieces of design. Makes me wonder why I chose Medicine as a subject.......the facts and the long words are interesting but the design is just not. But then again, it doesn't really need to be interesting, but it would be nice if it was just a slight bit captivating to look at. The balloon idea's cool but I don't really understand it.

I suddenly remembered a book a mate had borrowed from the library, called 'art of the label' or something like that. I just remember it being full of proper old label designs for most products really, one of them which I'm sure was medicine packaging. Anyway, I can't get to the book right now, but I thought i'd look up some similar items on the internet.

I quite like them to be honest, if you found a bottle of medicine in these days with a label similar to one of these then I'm sure you'd be less than tempted to take it. They all seem less regulated and branded than modern medicines.

Design for screen - Give Up Art. again.

Back to one of my favourite design companies, who produced a series of short animations for a Japanese TV station. They won the pitch after going up against about 20 other companies worldwide, so respect to them i guess. They are pretty cool animations, intended to 'provide a small moment of calm in between the frenetic pace of the channel's regular output', which is exactly what they do. i just dragged some pictures over but i'll drop the link as well, as it's worth looking at a couple of the video samples they have on there.

art on the underground

a cool bit of typography for some jubilee line art exhibition, designed by Richard Long. who is a fine artist. raises some interesting questions in my head.............

it really annoys me though that the grey coloured line is not actually continuous throughout the whole image, as it really seems like that was the intention. oh well. it's still quite nice anyway.

What is Design for Screen?

an ongoing investigation of design for digital media, exploring a broad range of contemporary design practice, in order to establish an informed understanding of my own opinions and preferences.

so basically, I'll be researching a load of screen-based designs to hopefully enable me to gain better ideas when producing my own work.

This is also alongside other research more directly aimed at various briefs, which will have a much more specific purpose.
